Spotted: Specialized Fatbike

Specialized has been seen developing a fatbike for some time now. The first pictures I saw were during last winter. The picture is of Specialized sponsored rider, Ned Overend holding what I am to assume to be a prototype raced for research and development.

Fast forward to present day, specifically at the Specialized 2014 product showcase in Copper mountain. From what I hear, all media there is under a press embargo until July 15th, but it looks like someone has spilled the beans a bit early. Have a look at what Mike Sinyard, founder and CEO of Specialized is holding up. I read it is called the Specialized Fatboy.

specializedFatboyThe name Fatboy makes sense as they already own it from BMX bikes of past. The downtube follows the current trend from Specialized of putting their name on the underside, look close and you can make it out. While looking closely, also notice that the wheels and tires don’t appear to be Surly pieces. I’m hoping for some tubeless rims!  I hear there will be two options, both using aluminum frames with carbon forks. I also have read that the frames will be 190mm rear spacing, allowing 4.8 inch tires and full use of a 10 speed rear cassette.

It sounds like more info will be released this coming Monday, the 15th.
